While electricity continues to be an inseparable aspect of our lives, it still poses a fatal threat to human safety and general well-being.
When it comes to designing a home for your family, a proper electrical installation system to safeguard their well-being is a must.
One can’t afford to show negligence when it comes to setting up properly insulated equipment. Preferably one that prevents major electric mishaps through electrical switches like shock, electrocution or fire.
Just as MCBs (Miniature Circuit Breaker) provide protection against thermal overload or overcurrent, a Residual Current Circuit Breaker or RCCB prevents excessive leakage of residual current out of the system.
The strong design of this protection device enables it to sense an earthing fault and break the circuit in case of a current imbalance.
It’s Main Function:
RCCB deviates the current flowing into the system to return back in full.
Its smart device design enables it to detect and compare a difference between the resident current value of a loose wire & that of a neutral one.
It is particularly useful for all out protection against the possibility of a faulty or loose wire connection.
For e.g. If your kid accidentally happens to touch an open live wire in the circuit with an RCCB installed, worry not.
The device will trip the circuit in time to prevent current leakage coming in contact with a human body.
An earth fault occurs with a current imbalance in your system earthing. Not only does a RCCB protect against earth faults causing a short circuit, it trips the power supply to prevent any leakage by fractions of a second.
In most cases, an RCCB with a power of 60 mA to 100mA is installed providing balanced protection between no obvious fault & real fault.
In further simplified terms, Kirchhoff’s law stating that a circuit’s incoming current must be equal to that of an outgoing one happens to be an underlying principle behind RCCBs.
You can also test the reliability of your RCCB device via including a test circuit. As when the button is pushed on, the current flows through the test circuit. Once there happens to be an imbalance on the neutral conductor, RCCB trips and disconnects the supply.
To conclude, RCCB can prove to be beneficial for a home’s electrical system in 3 major ways:
